The goal of all of the Self Protection Ltd workshops is for attendees to learn by experiencing the content as opposed to theorising. Theory helps, but when adrenaline is introduced to the body your brain does not function in the normal way - your thought processes go from the ‘neo cortex’ (day to day thinking) to the ‘Amygdala’ (emotional responses). This explains why most people have a freeze response, because their Amygdala hasn’t stored the relevant experience.
The workshops are age specific and investigate the implication of lifestyle choices in each defined age group and how these choices can impact upon the safety of the workshop participants.
Depending upon the age group, the workshop content includes anti-bullying techniques, e-safety, inappropriate touching under NSPCC guidelines, protection of personal space, escaping to places of safety, conflict resolution and pacifying techniques. Each workshop aims to give the best possible learning experience.
Ages 7 to 11
Be AWARE of your environment, potential dangers and your own alarm system. Follow the 4 steps: LISTEN and act on your alarm system, it is your best friend, STOP the danger (this may be by simply moving away), SAFE, get to somewhere safe and TELL someone you trust (a family member, teacher, police officer)
Ages 11 to 14 At this age it’s so easy for youngsters to get negative influences which can easily end in very serious situations, much of it from online. We teach them simple easy to remember assertive drills focusing on body language, 90% of human communication is non-verbal, and so these skills are essential. This is the first workshop that our Hitmen (padded attackers) are used as a ‘pressure test’.
Ages 14 to 17 Older teenagers have similar workshop content to the adult group, but are addressed slightly differently as it is recognised that they are still young, inexperienced in the wider world and do not realise they are not immortal! The following dangers are covered: awareness, drugs, alcohol, and social media. At this age the course gets more physical, as at this age the attendees have the capability of fighting off any predator.
Ages 18 - 64 Predators look for ‘victims’ and these can be identified easily. Our 3 ½ hour workshop is packed with relevant information and crucial scenarios that will keep you safe. After this short workshop you will be better prepared through your confidence, body language to deal with verbal and physical confrontations. Each attendee will face the Hitmen twice, giving you amazing empowerment.
Age 65+ As we get older we generally tend to get more fearful of society. Our workshops help you to live your life to the full without fear. There will be lots of tips on personal safety, body language, recognising a danger or just noisy groups. We also feel it’s still important to have a physical element, so the Hitmen are used so you feel prepared should any unwanted attention come your way.
All of these courses are open to both males and females, and no experience of martial arts is required. If you do have a martial arts background this course will have just as much relevance. It will test everything you feel you know about self-protection and question a lot you don't! Most martial artists have a preconceived idea of what they will do if they were attacked. Unfortunately, reality has a nasty way of destroying this 'false confidence'.
After completing the initial Self Protection workshop we offer an ULTIMATE and WEAPON AWARENESS workshop.
Our normal workshops don’t have the time to cover weapon attacks, so we devote two hours just on this. We try and give as much advice and experience as we can with this horrific subject. As with all our workshops the Hitmen are used here.
All our workshops have been praised for their effectiveness and how real they feel. For our Ultimate workshop we take you one at a time through three various scenarios in very real surroundings including houses, buses, trains, ATM’s phone boxes, night clubs in a group on safe matted areas. The purpose built venue gives you the unique opportunity to transfer the skills you’ve learnt on the mats to a dark and unfamiliar place which truly is the ultimate test.
